Photo Design: An Important Question to Ask Yourself

By Kerry Drager

One of the most important things a photographer can do as he or she is looking at a subject - or checking out images - is ask a simple question, "What is this photograph about?" So says Rob Sheppard, BetterPhoto instructor and Outdoor Photographer magazine editor-at-large.

When you know the answer to that question on photo design, writes Rob, then you can decide what you need to do to make the photo clearly say what you want it to say.

"I see this all the time in student’s work from my classes (including at the BetterPhoto.com online photography school, where everyone submits photos for critique in each lesson). Photographic composition can get confused because the photographer is taking a picture of a subject rather than looking to see what the photograph is really about."

Creative Photography: The Influences of Personal Vision

By Kerry Drager

Here's a great quote by famous photographer Ansel Adams:

"You don’t make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved."

Nature photographer Brenda Tharp shares that quote - plus her thoughts on personal vision with outdoor photography - in a new photo blog. Read Brenda's post at BetterPhoto Instructor Insights here:
